Chikkamagalur (also known as Chickamagaluru) is a town located in the foothills of Bababudangiri range in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town is known for its coffee and tea estates.
Chikkamagaluru literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in the native Kannada language. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna and hence the name. About 5 km from Chikkamagaluru there is a town called Hiremagaluru which means "The town of the elder daughter", too.
